In literary analysis, realism is the art of writing about everyday life situations with no pretenses or embellishments to cloud the reader’s mind. This style of writing became prevalent during the latter half of the nineteenth century, and was distinguished by the previous literary style of romanticism. Literary critics and reviewers alike have acknowledged realism as the â€Å"dominant paradigm in novel writing† (Rahn) during this time period as a way to discern the subtle shift in style. Realism gives close attention to the small details of life that might otherwise go unnoticed. It is a way of telling a story as it might actually happen, viewed through the senses objectively and thereby bringing the reader very close to the situation. Examples of realistic writing can be found in textual passages where the author describes how a particular food smells and tastes, or a description of particular sights and sounds that are brought into awareness. For the realist author, depiction of character is an integral aspect of moving the story along. The late nineteenth century was a time in which psychology and motivations were often examined more closely than ever before, which is one of the primary reasons why realism gained popularity during that time. Introduction A study taken place in urban China analyzed the effects of gender roles on marriage. The study investigated the marriage rates of men versus women based on their educational attainment. By using data from the CGSS (Chinese General Social Surveys), the hypotheses were tested that college women have lower marriage rates than men, and husbands have higher education and women are younger with lower education. The study asked adults 18 years and older their age, level of education, age of first marriage, and spouse’s level of education, if applicable. Education levels were placed into four categories: less than senior high school, senior high school, vocational school, and four-year college or more.
